When a contract ends without another engagement ready, separate what you know from what you fear. • Identify one relevant skills gap. Use real briefs or vacancies to decide whether training or practice is warranted.
• Maintain professional contact. Follow up with former clients and peers respectfully, without implying that networking guarantees a contract.

A bounded project or cohort may suit some contractors if the scope, ownership, supervision, confidentiality and exit conditions are clear.
